Also, we will be having a classroom party in the afternoon. Students are able to bring treats that are store-bought and individually wrapped. We have a total of 20 students in our class!
I hope everyone has a happy and safe Halloween! :-)
Students are allowed to wear their costumes tomorrow to school. They should wear school or gym shoes, but no weapons are allowed. If they don't wear a costume, they can wear a t-shirt, jeans, and gym shoes.

Tomorrow the students will be going on our field trip to Hollywood Boulevard to see Alexander, and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day. Students should wear their gym uniforms, so both the 1st and 2nd graders will be in unison and easily distinguished. We will be leaving at 9:30 and returning at 1:30. Students will receive a jumbo slice of pizza, popcorn, and soda.
In class, we read the book today and completed a Reading Response worksheet. Tomorrow, the students will sequence the story's events and then we will compare and contrast the book to the movie. The Scholastic Book Fair is going on this week! The students received a flyer about it last year. We will be attending the book fair Tuesday and Thursday, if you would like to spend money with your child. Also, the book fair is open after school if you'd prefer to stop in then!
Just a few reminders:
Field trip money is due Friday. Please turn in the permission form and money if your child is planning to go! Also, the scheduling notes for Parent Teacher Conferences went home today. It's first come, first serve as far as scheduling. The students played the Math game Salute! today. They loved it! They were so engaged in the game, used their resources to determine their number and worked well together. (Directions to this game are under the "Math Games/ Resources" tab.) Friday night is the Halloween Dance! I look forward to seeing the kids in their costumes and dancing the night away with them. Have a great night! During our Math lesson yesterday and today, somebody from CEMSE (University of Chicago's Center for Elementary Mathematics and Science Education) was here to videotape our class. The students had to determine whether the turn-around rule works for subtraction problems. They discovered that it does not work because the totals aren't the same. Example: For addition, 15+5 = 20 and 5+15=20 but for subtraction 20-5=15 and 5-20= -15. Most students were able to recognize that the total was either 0 or that it went past zero. Even though we haven't talked about negative numbers yet, the students used the classroom number line to find the answer. I was so proud of the deep thinking and conversations we had. Every day they impress with their understanding of numbers! Thank you for allowing your child to participate!
Tomorrow is PICTURE DAY!! Be sure to bring your best smile with you to school!! :-D Students are able to dress up/down, as long as it's appropriate for school. Remember: these are the pictures that will appear in the yearbook! Students will have their Unit 2 Math test on Thursday. This unit focused on addition facts, number stories, name collection boxes, and even vs. odd numbers. The students took a practice test today and I will conference with them to let them know how they did and what they need to work on. The SXU students will also be here leading a review activity for the kids! Today Progress Reports went home with your child! Please sign and return their reports to school. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to send me an email or note and we can set up a meeting.
